HAZEL CREST, IL–Cook County Board President, Toni Preckwinkle will join several state elected officials to honor U.S. Army Specialist Henry Mayfield, Jr., in a special Flag Day Celebration, to be held today at the Vernard L. Alsberry Jr. Municipal Center, 3601 W. 183rd Street in Hazel Crest at 10 am. Following the ceremony, a motorcade will proceed to Butterfield Street for the unveiling of the Honorary Street signing in Mr. Mayfield’s honor.
Preckwinkle is scheduled to speak during the event, along with Congresswoman Robin Kelly, Senator Michael Hastings, State Representative Debbie Meyers-Martin, and State Representative William Davis.
Army Specialist Mayfield was a 24-year-old Hazel Crest resident killed in the line of duty on January 5, 2020 in Afghanistan.
Early in the week, Preckwinkle attended a peace march held in Matteson, IL in memory of George Floyd, a 46-year-old Houston, TX native who died at the hands of a Minneapolis police, while in police custody. Floyd died when police pressed a knee into Floyd’s neck for 8:59 seconds.
On June 9, Honorable Preckwinkle attended The 8:59 Seconds of Silence Teleconference Prayer vigil for George Floyd hosted by Adolphus Kendall and Sandy Lewis.
